ARTIST's STATEMENT

Flowers mean different things to different people .... to me they are the secret of the cosmos Winifred Nicholson

I paint flower 'portraits' much as a portrait artist will paint heads and figures, and through them feel I express something fundamental about life and living. Translated into paintings the flowers become uber-flowers near perfect and sometimes to monumental scale.

I paint a wide range of flowers; formal cultivated varieties with great poise and drama like dahlia, peonii and lilies. Amaryllis are other-worldly and triffid like. I paint many daisies and daisy chains, all different , all similar, with a humble almost nostalgic air. Currently I am painting wild scottish flowers. Some are very tiny yet startlingly beautiful on close examination. They exhibit wonderful structure and colour. Their wildness contrasts and resonates with my painting style.

I studied Art and Art History at Goldsmiths College, London from 1989-1992. I live and work in Edinburgh, Scotland.
