I am always painting flowers, all sorts of them, however I also have particular projects/themes that I work on either out of interest or for a specific exhibition or publication. CURRENT - 'CARNAL' I have been inspired to begin a project that has a different floral tone to my past work. It has the working tile of ‘Carnal' and is an exploration of carnivorous plants. They are strange and I enjoy their dark metaphorical potential and slightly sinister beauty. I have been very fortunate to work with the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh who have an excellent collection of carnivorous plants and have kindly allowed me behind the scenes to study them.
'WILD FLOWERS' - Published by Perjink Press, October 2008 A collaboration with Pitlochry poet Giles Conisbee, this publication includes a debut collection of poems alongside beautiful new paintings from Fife based artist Kirsty Lorenz. The poems spiral wide, exploring themes from flowers and love to dreams and even flu remedies! Available to order for £5 from www.roobedo.co.uk
PEONII ROCKII PROJECT - Summer 2006 I discovered a specialist plant nursery in Germany that imports a beautiful breed of peony from China called 'Peonii Rockii' which I was determined to paint. In 2006 The Hope Scott Trust generously funded a research trip to Germany to visit the flowers during their two week flowerings season in May. These beautiful blousey flowers inspired a series of paintings that were initially shown in a solo exhibition at the Riverside Gallery, Stonehaven. The paintings are now available as limited edition giclee prints onto paper and canvas. Please see the shop for more details.
ONGOING - DAISY PAINTING PROJECT This is a long term and ongoing project. I began creating daisy paintings when my first daughter was born in 2004. I found myself with my baby on our back green making a daisy chain as I had in my childhood. I was enjoying the nostalgic sunny reverie it put me in and realised what a lovely painting they might make. I began to experiment with images in the studio. I am still inspired by their humble prolific beauty and never cease to be impressed by their great charm despite their small stature. On a good sunny daisy day the grass is sparkling like a starry night sky with their flowers and I cant envisage ever not wanting to paint them. Every daisy, daisy chain or other configuration of daisies I paint is individual and original. This is conceptually fundamental to me as part of my daisy project. I love that the flowers are all the same yet subtly different and wish my paintings to reflect this. Below you can see some examples from my daisy painting project including the ongoing 'One in a Million' series of individual daisies, and the 'Wheel of Life' series of daisy chains.
